Sunday, 8/31/08 JERRYS R.I.P.

It saddens me to say that after nearly two decades of shows, the infamous Jerry’s Pizza in Bakersfield will close it’s doors as a live music venue. Jerry's will still operate as a pizza parlor, but sky rocketing expenses and sagging attendance has ended the club facet. The very last Numbskull show will be White Chapel on Tuesday, September 2nd. Come bid fond farewells.

Plagued with unpleasing aesthetics, deafening acoustics, hades-like temperatures, demented management, zero amenities and cockroaches the size of rodents, Jerry’s Pizza still was the pillar of rock and roll for the Central Valley. I love Jerry’s pizza to no end and despite all of the above it’s still one of my favorite venues we have ever run. I loved the element of danger that accompanied each and every show from the downtown bako riff raff and the tweekin pawn shop regulars to the fist first diplomacy of the locals, not exactly ideal conditions for live music but entertaining nonetheless.
My Chemical Romance, AFI, Buckcherry, Fallout Boy, Weezer, Thrice, Murder City Devils, Against Me! and thousands of other bands have graced the stage/floor of Jerry's basement at one time or another. This venue is truly stuff of legend. Thank you Jerry for all the phenomenal memories.

hi it has been a while but i am good i am now going to complain and moan like normal.

Stargate Atlantis

the 5th season has just started over here in the UK we are only 3 episodes in but i am at episode 6 as the show is on you-tube and now the US is on episode 8 so i will now have to wait till the DVD box set is out to watch this season but not only that i now have found out that this is to be the last 20 episodes of the series witch in my opinion is a shame as there is a lot more that could have been done to save the show, for example: have sky one on virgin media and then the show would have had more viewers and then if the show was allowed to run to the 10th episode over here in the UK then the viewing numbers would have been adequate to save the show.

now i have to look forward to the new series Stargate Universe and the prospect of stargate Atlantis and stargate SG1 films witch should keep the franchise alive for years to come if there best case scenario is achieved of 2 SG1 and 2 Atlantis films a year.

speaking of Stargate SG1 last weak i bought myself StargateContinuum and this is one of the best films i have seen this year with the exception of A Dog's Breakfast this has not yet been released over here in the UK but i have watched it on-line and it is funny well the humor is only sold by the cast witch is almoast all actors from stargate's SG1 and Atlantis. it was written and Directed by the talented David Hewlett who also plays the part of the character Patrick.

i have no idea when this film is out but it should be soon so that i can enjoy this film without having to wait for it to buffer on the computer.

i go back to college on Tuesday and i have been so board that these last 9 Weeks have been so slow i have had nothing to do but now i have my mountain bike working a bit i now don't have to worry about paying for transport to college so that makes things a bit cheaper but Tuesday i had to go to my aunts on my bike and the route that i took was about 8 1/2 miles so i have been in a bit of pain but it is getting better.

i have been listening to quite a lot of music over the last couple of months and it has been nice as i have not relay had the time with college and i wont have the time when i go back but i still has been good to listen.

Trucker Speaks for the first Time about Greyhound Murder

The family of Tim McLean is suing Greyhound, the RCMP, the federal ministers of transportation and safety and the man suspected of committing the gruesome killing of the 22-year-old man aboard a bus in rural Manitoba in July.

At a press conference in Winnipeg Tuesday afternoon, Jay Prober, the lawyer for McLean's father, Tim McLean Sr., said the lawsuit I not about money but to make those responsible be made to account for their failures in the death of their son. They felt the death should have been prevented and they hope that better safety measures will be implemented by Greyhound buses. They are also upset with the delay in the Mounties action to end the incident sooner.

The McLean’s are asking for a measly $150,000 compensation, which is way too low for the loss of such a young vibrant life. The money will be shared with the parents and siblings.

Li, 40, has been charged with second-degree murder. He is accused of first stabbing, then mutilating McLean's body on a bus just west of Portage La Prairie, Man., on July 30.

For the first time the hero of this tragedy, a long distance truck driver, Christopher Alguire spoke to CBC. His voice was shaking. He sounded still angry and he was. He said all he wanted was to be put in a cage with Li and let them fight to the death. He was mad because this man threatened his own life and at one point he had to leave the bus and close the door so that Li would not escape. It was he who came into the bus and let the people out and took them far away where they could be spared the horrific sight. He was upset that when the RCMP came they brought the people back close to the bus where they saw Li holding the McLean’s head in his arm. He said the innocent people should never have been exposed to that.

Alguire, a long distance trucker said that when he noticed that the bus was in trouble he pulled over to see if he could help.

"You see somebody on the side of the highway, pulled over erratically in such a manner, you instantly know something is wrong, and it's just the nature of my personality, I'm always willing to stop and give a helping hand," he said .

He s aid that a passengers told him that a passenger on the bus had attacked and stabbed a man, later identified as 22-year-old Tim McLean, a Winnipeg man

Alguire grabbed a snipe, a metre-long bar used to help secure loads on his truck, and immediately ran to the bus and assisted the bus driver, who was holding the vehicle's door closed.Alguire said he is disturbed and angry that police waited so long before arresting the suspect, allowing more time for indignities to be done to McLean's body.

"Now after the decapitation and stuff, the one RCMP officer had the people move to the front of the second bus, so now they could stand on the highway, turn around and look into the monster windshields of this Greyhound bus to where the assailant and victim were.

"And now this ... character, he has an audience and it's like he's provoked to show them his work, and now all these innocent people have to see what this man has been doing."

McLean's mother told media last week that RCMP should have stormed the bus to save her son's body from further atrocities.

Alguire agreed.

"I told the cops a few different times to shoot him, because he has no reason in this world to live anymore," he said.

Alguire acknowledges that people hail his actions as heroic, but he shrugs off the distinction.

"I've had mentors in my life that have always shown me the way of battle, and it just came naturally to me," he said.

"We've got a very close family, we love each other very much and we'd do anything for each other to keep each other safe. It's a dangerous world out here and you know, we got to be prepared at all times to protect our loved ones."

Vince Weiguang Li, 40, is charged with second-degree murder in McLean's death. He has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric assessment to determine if he's fit to stand trial.

Daarbij komt dan nog dat het ook zo ongeveer de afbeelding is waar we het voordeligst opstaan. U kunt met een gerust hart aannemen dat onze andere plaatjes in zwemkledij u geen genoegen zouden verschaffen.

Zoals zo vaak biedt ook nu weer kleinzoon Christopher uitkomst. Net anderhalf jaar jong bereidt hij zich hier voor op de Olympische Spelen van 2028. Naar verluidt zal Amsterdam zich kandidaat voor die spelen stellen. U kunt zijn – tegen die tijd hoogbejaarde - grootouders dan op de eretribune aantreffen.

Så er vi her allerede, en ny film på listen, og vi kommer høyere og høyere. I dag er det den 23. beste filmen jeg har sett som skal presenteres. Og det er:

En annen av mine absolutte favorittregissører, Christopher Nolan, kom i år med den andre filmen i rekken om Batman, etter Batman Begins. I tillegg har han en veldig imponerende liste med filmer bak seg, som Memento, Insomnia og The Prestige. Skuespillerne i The Dark Knight er et stjernelag uten like, med Christian Bale (nevnte The Prestige, 3:10 to Yuma (tidligere på blogglisten min)), Heath Ledger (Brokeback Mountain, I'm Not There), Aaron Eckhart (Thank You for Smoking), Michael Caine (også The Prestige, Children of Men), Maggie Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko, Stranger Than Fiction), Gary Oldman (Leon, Harry Potter 3-5) og Morgan Freeman (The Shawshank Redemption, Se7en). Disse nye Batman-filmene er om mulig på linje med Ocean's-filmene når det gjelder stjernespekkede cast.

I The Dark Knight fortsetter sagaen om Batman (Bale), Gothams beskytter. Denne gangen er hans store motstander The Joker (Ledger), en tilsynelatende fullstendig gal og anarkistisk skurk. For å sitere Batmans butler Alfred (Caine): "Some people just want to watch the world burn." Batmans kjærlighetsinteresse fra den første filmen, Rachel Dawes (Gyllenhaal), er blitt sammen med Harvey Dent (Eckhart). Dent er district attorney (en slags hovedadvokat? Fant ikke noen logisk oversettelse), og veldig ambisiøs i tillegg. Sammen med løytnant Gordon (Oldman) fra politiet og med Batmans hjelp vil han renske gatene i Gotham for kriminalitet.

Batman Begins var den beste filmen basert på en tegneserie jeg hadde sett når den kom ut for 3 år siden. The Dark Knight topper den på alle måter. Helt fra første øyeblikk drar den deg inn, med en helt fortreffelig ransscene. The Joker får intet mindre enn to av de beste introduksjonsscenene jeg har sett, for å ikke å snakke om latteren! Egentlig er hver eneste scene som involver jokeren noe av det beste og mest underholdende jeg har sett. Dette er en fantastisk spennende actionfilm med gode karakterer og en historie som ikke er redd for å snu og vende på ting. Nolan har utvilsomt gjort det igjen.

Skuespillmessig er dette helt perfekt. Heath Ledger spiller en så skremmende Joker at det er vanskelig å blinke med øynene når man ser ham på skjermen. Jeg glemmer helt at dette er en skuespiller, og håper inderlig på en Oscar. Veldig veldig synd at Ledger døde kort etter filmen var ferdig innspilt. Bale spiller Batman med samme sikkerhet som før, umulig å finne noe å klage på der. Aaron Eckhart forsvinner kanskje litt mellom de to store rollene, men dersom en tar seg tid til å legge merke til det, vil jeg si at hans rolleprestasjon er opp i mot like god som Ledgers. Det var også et bra trekk å bytte ut Katie Holmes med Maggie Gyllenhaal i rollen som Rachel Dawes, til tross for at jeg egentlig er i mot å bytte ut skuespillere i oppfølgere. Om Michael Caine, Gary OIdman og Morgan Freeman er det lite å si. Sikre som banken, slik de alltid er.

Visuelt er det veldig fint å se på, det virker som om stilen er videreført fra Batman Begins. Og så skader det ikke med de fantastiske kostymene. Spesielt er dressen til The Joker veldig stilig. Batmobilen fra forrige film er fremdeles med, men det er en twist med denne også. I tillegg må jeg si at det så virkelig vondt ut å bli slått av Batman i denne filmen. Utrolig harde slag han ga fra seg, kanskje mye takket være bra lyddesign. Musikken er også veldig bra. Mange ganger er det lite musikk, og så kommer den på akkurat de rette øyeblikkene, og man får en god følelse inni seg. Liker også veldig godt den spenningstonen som blir brukt, uharmoniske toner som barre stiger og stiger.

Filmen får nesten bare skryt overalt. IMDb's brukere gir den 9.1/10 (260 763 stemmer), noe som plasserer den på 3. plass på listen over de beste filmene noensinne. Nå går jo denne faktisk på kino ennå, så ingen Oscarnominasjoner foreløpig. Jeg blir sjokkert hvis ikke denne drar inn en del nominasjoner, men hvor mange får vi vente og se på. Ta og sjekk ut trailerene nedenfor. Jeg klarte ikke velge en, så du får to forskjellige. Så kan du se Batman Begins, og følge opp med å se The Dark Knight på kino mens du ennå har sjansen. Jeg har sett den to ganger allerede.

My friend Chris was always the guy to teach people things. Or to turn them on to a myriad of things that they might have eventually found themselves, but more often than not, wouldn't have. He taught all of his friends so much during his life. We're all different people for knowing him.

I haven't stopped learning from Chris after his suicide.

There, I think that's the first time I've actually used that word when talking about him.

But really what I learned from all of this is that life, even when it's the shittiest shit ever, is still awesome. There are still kittens to pet, hugs to give, kisses to receive. There is the ocean and all the creatures in it. There are beautiful days of sitting on the beach listening to your favorite tunes and reading a good book.

There is love everywhere, even when you don't think so. Even when you think no one in the world loves you, trust me there are more people that do than you could ever imagine. More people who's life would be worse without you in it.

There is always music. Music to comfort you when you are down or music to celebrate with you when you are up. There is always a basketload of things that you will miss out on if you are gone. No more sitting by the campfire with your friends talking and planning ridiculous parties. No more being called by someone just because they want to hear YOUR VOICE and chatter about mundane wonderful things with you. No more being trusted with someone's secrets. No more inside jokes.

Even if you think you'd never be missed, you would be.

Since Chris died I've been making a point to let people know I love them more often. I've been trying to treasure things more than I would have in the past. Sometimes just exchanging a look with The Boyfriend can send me into a euphoric fit because I value love and life so much more now.

I think these are all important lessons. And they've been good for me to learn. I just wish I hadn't learned them the way I did.

First Day Of School

Today is that dreaded day of days. Children look forward to seeing their friends but not to getting up so early, parents look forward to peace & quiet but not the blaring of that alarm clock. You save on your groceries but spend more on your gas. Today is the first day of school.

All three children have uniforms this year, something new to them. All three on their own with out my help or input, wore the same colors lol. Khaki shorts or pants with a red shirt. I have a picture on my camera I will share it later, they all look good and proper.

Christopher got his schedule as he got to school, they had had a mix up at open house. He is happy he got the classes and teachers he was hoping for. Honors Science and Advanced History. The Science teacher is very hands on, he doesn't like paperwork. Which is good cuz neither does Christopher. He told the students they would take a computer apart and put it back together. I am not so sure about advanced history but.....

Caitlin who told me again and again she was not tucking in her shirt, they could send her home... well before she went int eh front door they made her tuck her shirt in lol..... poor baby. So do I get to say I told you so yet? She spent 45 minutes on her hair this morning, now she got it cut short and she straightened it so why it took 45 minutes I don't know...

Jacob had a melt down at his school. well that is a little over stated. He didn't want me to leave and he didn't want to stay. I had to walk away from him while the teacher held his hand and tears streamed down his cheeks. Now if that doesn't just break your heart you have never had to do it. But I won't be doing that again. After school we have to go to the doctors office, I noticed a fine rash on his tummy last night after his bath... he has no fever at all but it sure looks like a strep rash...

Tomorrow I start a full time job and I won't be able to take or pick him up anymore. I won't be home when he gets off the bus, and 2 nights out of the week I won't be there when he goes to bed. Pray for us, I am unsure of being able to handle this. So much change... but so far it is an ok first day of school , no surprises.

the witches of avila beach

I live in a town of less than 800 people. Actually Avila is not even a town. It's unincorporated area of California. Either way we have to go to the post office to get our mail and we can't get Fed Ex out here because there isn't any individual delivery.

Because our "town" is so small, everyone pretty much knows everyone else. If you don't know someone, the best course of action is to stop and introduce yourself and if the person is of legal drinking age, offer them a beer, because Avila is a drinkin' town.

I used to come here as a kid, before I moved out to the coast five years ago. This was my family's vacation spot of choice. Not the near by Pismo that is favored by hometown's locals. Avila. Always Avila. I grew up on the beach that is now down the street from my house. It was so weird and funky here and so safe that at seven years old I was sent out to "play" from our hotel every day we were here, with my backpack, kickboard and five dollars.

Trust me when I say five dollars went a LONG way in those days.

Eventually my grandparents got too old to bring us here. And in the 1990s Unocal's oil tankards that had long been a part of the Avila Beach landscape leaked. In response, the residents literally asked Unocal to dig up our town and move it while they cleaned up the bullshit mess they made.

They reopened the town about the same year I moved here. I remember going straight from my job interview to Avila with a newspaper to sit in what would become MY BAR to have a beer and read the apartment ads. It took me almost the entire five years I have lived out here to find a place, but I am now an Avila local. And with that comes the people.

The really glorious and amazing people. And I mean that.

A few nights ago I was down on the new (and its still new to everyone here) promenade with K and D, two of my best girlfriends locally. We were having drinks at the bar and feeling the general good vibes that arise when you can drink less than 500 feet from the ocean. So in a sense, cackling occurred.

Some busser from the resturant next door was talking to K and asked what was happening that we were all out drinking on a Tuesday night like this and I said something like "The Witches of Avila Beach are having a confrence"

It's sort of stuck.

Anyway... fast forward to last night, I'm sitting on my neighbors deck drinking with ladies who are mature enough to be my dad's mom. MK and K2 are Avila royality. They've been here for years. They know all the rough fishermen by name. They were hear long before the spill and they knew all the cool places back then. We were all telling stories and laughing and enjoying the perfect weather when MK tells me that my neighbor D brought back a bodybag full of Quincenera dresses from the mall in Santa Maria.

Obviously I was like WHAT?

But he did, all new with the tags on from the mall down there, maybe a store was closing, but we obviously need to have an Avila prom and wear these crazy things.

Yes, it's like that here. It will most likely happen to be quite honest.

Then of course MK and K2 had to sing me the old Avila theme song they wrote back in the day about the Avila Beach Wild Life Preservation Society. Cackling ensued. Witches of Avila Beach style.

The women here are incredible. They are all strong and funny and their own person. They may be married or they may have children or they may be single forever, they may be gay. But all of my girlfriends here are entirely their own person. They are strong. They are smart. They help each other. They help me.

When Christopher passed away (she says like it was an accident) these are the women who came to me. K and D and AS and MK and everyone. They came at K's phone call and these women held me and listened to my stories and cried with me. They came to help me hold the pain. To work their magic so to speak.

I'm proud that these are my friends. I am proud to be a witch of Avila too. And I'm shocked that I have the strength to be one...

Batman The Dark Knight with Joker Heath Ledger

Ich habe mir gestern den Film im Kino angeschaut.
Und wie nicht anders zu erwarten, war es eine gute Fortsetzung von Batman Begins.

Auch die Performence von Heath Ledger war großartig als Joker, er ist als realistischer Psychopath ausgelegt.
Wenn man sich das Schauspiel ansieht, kann man schon verstehen das Heath Ledger nachts vieleicht wegen
der Rolle nicht richtig schlafen konnte.
Und deswegen auch Albträume hatte.
Auch wenn ein Schauspieler nur spielt, gibt es Rollen in denen man sich verliert, und das kann auch auf den eigenen geistigen Zustand ein wenig abfärben.

Da sind Deppressionen wahrscheinlich nicht mal das schlimmste. Ich will aber gar nicht spekulieren,
was genau in seinem traurigen Fall passiert ist.

Eigentlich wollte ich nur sagen, wie dieser Tod wieder einmal die Massen ins Kino zieht.
Der erste Teil hat meines Wissens so ca. 380 Millione Dollar eingespielt.

Ich finde The Dark Knight auch sehr gut gemacht, und als Fan ist es sowieso klar gewesen, das ich mir den
Film anschauen werde.
Aber was da jetzt abgeht ist wieder typisches "gehn wir uns mal einen toten im Kino anschauen".

Ich verurteile das nicht einmal, so sind wir Menschen eben, primitiv immer auf ein Spektakle aus.

Ich wette die Filmfirma beißt sich jetzt gnadenlos in den eigenen Hintern, das sie nicht den Joker abkratzen hat lassen. Was wäre das noch für eine Werbung gewesen.

Aber nein sie lassen den Harvey Dent (Two Face) ins Gras beißen, und jetzt haben sie keinen Heath Ledger mehr
der den Joker vieleicht nochmal gespielt hätte.

Aber entweder sie kramen einen anderen Feind aus, oder lassen Two Face wieder auferstehen.

Als Schauspieler sollte man sich auch Sorgen machen, die Filmfirmen kommen jetzt vieleicht bei
machen Leuten die nicht so Kassenmagneten sind auf blöde Ideen.

Also ich würde keine bezahlte Lebensversicherung als Goodie von meinen Produzenten annehmen.

Obwohl die meisten Stars sind eh auf einem Selbstzerstörungstrip, denen muss man nur ein wenig zureden.
Deine Karriere ist eh schon zuende, geh mit einem großen Knall die Leute werden dich nie vergessen, du wirst
eine Legende sein.

Ja so ist das leider in unserer Gesellschaft.

Ich habe seine Filme gerne gesehen, sie haben mir Spass gemacht und manchmal auch zu Tränen gerührt.
Wenn ich meinen Lieblingsfilm von ihm sagen müsste, wäre das nicht Batman, auch nicht Brokeback Mountain.

Bei mir waren das Vier Federn und Candy.

Después de la noticia que la agrupación de RBD se separa, los fan latinoamericanos y europeos se preparan para manifestarse este sábado porque no están de acuerdo con la decisión. No sabemos si logren su objetivo, pero si será muy gratificante para RBD que sus fans no quieran que se desintegren. Ojala logren su objetivo!!

La famosa agrupación mexicana RBD, integrad por Anahí, Poncho, Christopher, Dulce María, Maite y Christian,, nos comunico a través de su pagina Web oficial que este 21 de Agosto es el comienzo de su ultima gira como agrupación.
Ellos nos dice que han hecho juntos sueños realidad, sueños que jamás imaginaron que podrían lograr, disfrutaron y aprendieron juntos, pero que sienten que ya es el fin de la agrupación. Se van en un buen momento sus carreras están en lo alto. Chicos les deseamos todo lo mejor en su nueva etapa!!!

Canadian Paedophile Jailed By Thai Court: My Verdict

Police in Germany used special technology to 'un-swirl' his face in child sex abuse pictures posted on the internet and an Interpol manhunt tracked him down in Thailand but yesterday Christopher Neil was smiling as he started a 3 year and 3 month sentence in a Bankok prison.

Despite Neil appearing in hundreds of child pornography pictures, the Thai judge was lenient because Neil pled guilty. He was ordered to pay 60,000 Baht (£955) to the parents of one of his victims while he still faces trial over abusing the boys younger brother.

When asked to comment on his sentence Neil said he was "OK" with it and it was "Fine".

I have to say, this sends out a terrible message for all the dirty paedophiles who are using Asian Countries, such as Thailand and Cambodia as in Neil's case, that it is fine to abuse and rape its children. I have to wonder why a judge, in any country, who is faced with a pervert like this would not sentence them to at least 40 years. I think it should be manditory, such as in cases like Christopher Neil, when a paedophile is caught in pictures or in videos abusing children, that they are castrated and given 40 years in prison. I think that would send out a pretty strong signal. A slap on the wrist such as this is not enough. It's the same in Scotland and the rest of the UK. Legislation on any type of child abuse should be stringent. Even the death penalty wouldn't be too harsh. Even torture...yes, thats it... they should be castrated, tortured for a few years...then hung...then fed to pigs.

RBD anuncia su separación y gira de despedida

El grupo musical mexicano RBD anunció hoy en un comunicado de prensa su separación y una última gira por Europa y América.

Esta gira de despedida iniciará en España, donde se presentarán el 21, 23 y 25 de agosto, para luego dar otros conciertos en Serbia, Eslovenia, Rumanía, Venezuela, Argentina, Perú, Brasil, Estados Unidos y México.

Aseguran que la desintegración del grupo, que surgió como parte del proyecto de la telenovela Rebelde (adaptación de Televisa a la argentina Rebelde Way) no se debe a problemas entre los integrantes, sino a proyectos individuales de cada uno de ellos.

El comunicado oficial es firmado por Alfonso, Any, Christian, Christopher, Dulce María y Maite.

Qué se puede decir? Algunos sufrirán por otra noticia y otros podrán dormir tranquilos. En lo personal no me sorprende, pues desde que este chavo (Christian?) declaró ser gay, el grupo se apagó mediáticamente (a pesar de seguir siendo muy popular).

También hay que decir que RBD ya había durado mucho así que bueno, suerte a los integrantes en sus proyectos personales, pues aunque nunca me gustó mucho que digamos el grupo, a final de cuentas ganaron muchos fanáticos y hay que respetarlo.

MÉXICO - A banda mexicana RBD anunciou o fim das atividades por meio de um comunicado oficial publicado em seu site. Os shows marcados até agora, porém, serão realizados normalmente, como uma espécie de turnê de despedida.

- Todo grande projeto precisa de uma transformação para transcender e, hoje, nós estamos iniciando esse processo - afirma o comunicado, sem citar quais seriam os planos dos integrantes após o fim da banda.

Os próximos shows do RBD estão marcados para Madri, Santiago de Compostela e Barcelona. Ainda este ano o grupo se apresenta também na Sérvia, Eslovênia, Romênia, Venezuela, Argentina, Peru, Brasil, Los Angeles e México.

MTV, You Dirty, Dirty Whore

I can vaguely remember when it didn’t matter what time of day you turned on MTV, you’d see music videos. Similar to pop radio, you could count on seeing a hot video every hour on the hour. Now, it seems like the only time I see music videos on MTV or VH1 is when I wake up at 4am and flip on the TV until I fall back to sleep.

I miss music videos. They used to be the best part of enjoying music. So while I was flipping channels last night at 3am, I started getting a little nostalgic and started thinking about all of the music videos that made me want to watch MTV when I was growing up.

I could go on and on about all of the videos that I loved, but I decided to make it a little more personal. So here is my top 10.

Van Halen – Jump

“Ah ha!”

“Hey You!”

“Who said that?”

While Van Halen may have not started the hair band trend of the 80’s, they were a big part of it. The video for “Jump” was like watching the party that your older cousin was always talking about. David Lee Roth was on fire in his neon spandex glory and it was hard not to find yourself smiling after the video was over.

Cake – the Distance

This is one of those videos that on the surface, it doesn’t really make sense. You have a guy that is running an endless race. There are large animal costumes, awesome guitar riffs, and that weird keyboard flute thing. Put it all together, it’s just fun. Hidden in the visuals is the metaphor of the song. It’s a testament to tenacity and endurance. It also happens to be my motto when I feel like giving up.

Duran Duran – Hungry Like the Wolf

This was the first video that I could remember that felt like a movie to me. It was an adventure that played out over the course of 4 minutes. Honestly, when I watched it as a kid of 5 years old, I thought it was a movie trailer. I was incredibly upset when I found out that there wasn’t a feature length movie to see. So I had to settle for Romancing the Stone, what a turd.

Fatboy Slim – Weapon of Choice

I’ve got three words for this one: Christopher Walken dancing. Nuff Sed!

Jamiroquai – Virtual Insanity

Up until OK GO released the video for “Here it Goes Again”, this video was the king of treadmill videos. This video was so cool, that nobody seemed to noticed that lead singer Jay Kay was wearing a top hat made out of a black poodle. On top of releasing a great video for a good song, they followed it up with the best video to feature super exotic sports cars, “Cosmic Girl”.

Radiohead – Just

Radiohead has always been just a little more cool that I will ever be. Maybe that’s why I don’t “get” about 99% of what they put out. “Just” may have not been the biggest single off of their 1995 album, The Bends, but the video was amazingly powerful. It is so simple that it borders on being pure genius. I just wish I knew what the guy told everybody.

Michael Jackson – Billy Jean

This may have not been the biggest video off the Thriller album, but it was one of the most dynamic. The way that the ground and other things would light up as MJ stepped on them was brilliant. Then when you couple that with music video breakthroughs, it makes it legendary. Sure the video for “Thriller” will arguably be considered the best video ever, but this one was the one that I would run home from school to see.

Peter Gabriel – Sledgehammer

I don’t really care for Peter Gabriel’s music. It has always seemed a little too preachy for my taste. It’s probably the same reason I don’t really care for Genesis either. However, the videos from the 1986 album, So, really helped define what a music video could be. They at least reminded me to eat my fruit and veggies.

Spike Jonze' Body of Work

This is where it gets tough for me. I know I already put one of director Spike Jonze’ videos in my list, but what can I say? The guy makes amazing videos. They are always cutting edge. Just like the way that U2 and Madonna have a way of changing music every time they put out a new album, Jonze changed the face of MTV with each video he directed in the 90’s and 00’s. The following are my all-time favorite videos ever.

Beastie Boys – Sabotage

This is another video that made me wish that there was a movie that I could go see. It was the first single off of my least favorite Beastie Boys album, but it was a new era of cool for the B-Boys. The previous statement about U2 and Madonna also applies to the Beastie Boys.

Weezer – Buddy Holly

It’s the video that let a whole generation know just how cool Happy Days is. I can fondly remember twisting my ankle trying to do the dance that Fonzie performs in the video.
